Bonds are backed by the asset of the issuer whereas debentures are not secured by any of the physical assets or collateral. Debentures are issued and purchased only on the creditworthiness and reputation of the issuing party. The interest rate of bonds is generally lower than debentures. The bond is the most common type of debt instrument used by private corporations and by governments. In the investing world, bonds are generally considered to be a relatively safe investment. Highly rated corporate or government bonds come with little perceived default risk.

In a sense, all debentures are bonds, but not all bonds are debentures. Whenever a bond is unsecured, it can be referred to as a debenture. To complicate matters, this is the American definition of a debenture. In British usage, a debenture is a bond that is secured by a company assets. In some countries, the terms are interchangeable. Debentures generally have a more specific purpose than other bonds. While both are used to raise capital, debentures typically are issued to raise capital to meet the expenses of an upcoming project or to pay for a planned expansion in business. These debt securities are a common form of long-term financing taken out by corporations.
